MCAS Yuma is a US Marine Corps air station that is home to several squadrons, including the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, Marine Aviation Weapons and Tactics Squadron 1 (MAWTS-1), and Marine Fighter Training Squadron 401 (VMFT-401). The air station is situated about 2 miles from the city of Yuma City and shares facilities with Yuma International Airport, occupying an area of around 3,000 acres of flat desert wilderness.
Akela Engineering and Consulting performed detailed and comprehensive energy audits on 125 existing building facilities totaling 2,097,000 square feet at the Marine Corps Air Station Yuma (MCAS Yuma). The primary objective of the audits was to identify potential energy projects from the surveys, such as renewables, mechanical, electrical, building envelopes, and water conservation measures.
The energy audits on the existing building facilities at MCAS Yuma yielded significant results, identifying an anticipated energy savings of 6,100-MWh in electricity, 110,000-therm in natural gas, and 4,200-kgal in domestic water. By implementing all energy reduction recommendations, MCAS Yuma could achieve a 16% reduction in electrical energy consumption, a 25% reduction in natural gas usage, and an 8% reduction in potable water consumption.
